Aperture, Shutter Speed, and ISO Questions

Aperture
F2.8

F16 or higher

1. The pupil is the body part that has a similar to the function of aperture, because it is a hole that lets light pass through the human eye.

2. The smaller the aperture, the larger the f-stop value is. The higher the aperture, the lower the f-stop is.

3. Aperture impacts depth of field because it can sharpen objects in the image. To create depth, the background becomes more unfocused because the main subject is very clear and focused. The main subjects will become sharp and the background will become blurry as aperture is adjusted, which can make a photo very appealing.

Shutter Speed
High shutter

Slow shutter

1. With light
a) At a booth in the middle of the courtyard near a tree, I would use a slow shutter speed because there is not much motion going on.
b) In a food booth outside under one of the red awning, I would use a slow shutter speed because the red awning would block out light from the image.
c) During the Silver Stars performance in the gym, you would use a fast shutter speed because the lighting is bright, and the dancers move very quickly and there is a lot of motion.
d) To capture students dancing near the center of the courtyard, you would use a fast shutter speed, because there is motion when the students dance.
e) When the people are streaming in from the front door, I would use a fast shutter speed because the crowd is moving a lot, and they are moving at a quick pace in order to get in.
f) At a stand where students are shooting basketballs, I would use a fast shutter speed because you have to get the basketball in motion clearly and the student moving.

2. With dim environment
a) At a booth in the middle of the courtyard near a tree, I would use a slower shutter speed in order to capture more light since the tree is making the image darker on top of the night sky.
b) In a food booth under a red awning, a slow shutter speed would be used to expose more light to the image and get some motion.
c) During the Stars performance, a slow shutter speed would be used in order to create a more blurred effect of people dancing.
d) To capture students dancing in the courtyard, a slow shutter speed would be used for motion blur effect and export more light outside.
e) When people enter the doors, a slow shutter speed would be used to expose more light and capture a more blurry view of the subjects and the direction they're going.
f) At a basketball stand with students shooting basketballs, I would use a slow shutter speed in order to get the blur motion of the basketball, and the student shooting the ball.

3. Aperture Priority setting means that you set the lens in aperture, which automatically sets the shutter speed based on the aperture.

Shutter Priority setting is when you set the shutter speed for the image, and the aperture is automatically selected.

Manual Mode is when you select and set both the shutter speed and the aperture manually.

ISO

ISO 3200

ISO 200

1. The advantages of shooting at a high ISO during a sporting event are not introducing blur to the image, and capturing fast motion shots. Also, more light is being exposed when using a higher ISO.

2. The author suggested to use a low ISO when shooting there is plenty of light in the image, and you want to retain the amount of detail shown. Sometimes a low ISO can be used also in dim and dark environments.

3. The author suggests to use a higher ISO when there is not enough light in the image, and you want o bring out more details. Also, use high ISO when you are shooting motion, and do not want any blur in the image.
