Africa

Africa
1) I read about a man who spent months in Africa on its flat plains capturing animals in their peaceful state of mind. The photos are very interesting because the rules of photography are shown very uniquely. Nick got very close to some animals in order to capture these images, which is really cool. Also, each picture is in a black and white tone, which makes the image more dramatic and moving in my opinion. While he sat these animals, he also learned more about them as he observed them for such a long period of time.

2)

3) This photo is of a mother lion, and its child, in the plains of Africa. The background is blurred and the two lions are the main subject. The cub is snuggling between its mothers arms and is nestled underneath its neck. I chose this photo because not only is there just a great picture, but there is more meaning to it than others. The affection on the cubs face is heartwarming, and the way the two are embraced is very pleasing to eye. Also, the image is very touching in the sense that the photographer actually got this close to a mother lion and its cub.

4) There are a few rules of photography shown in this photo. First, rule of thirds is shown because the subject (the two lions) are a bit off center and to the left of the frame. Also, simplicity is shown because the image only focuses on the two lions embracing each other, and the background is blurred out.

5) Nick Brandt uses a Pentax 67II camera and only had two fixed lenses, with a black and white film on medium format. He did not use telephoto or zoom lenses, which is important. This is important because it allowed him to get very close to his subjects, which increases the quality and the identity shown through the animals in the picture. The black and white film was used in order to shoot dramatic landscapes and use a documentary-style type of photography.

6) Nick Brandt took these photos because he had always been interested in and loved animals. He photographed the animals uniquely to show depth and spirit, through the animals in their normal state go being. This way, he could capture and express his feelings and love for animals through his work. Also, he believes that the world is slowly being destroyed and threatened by us. When he captures the animals, he feels like the animal and him are equal, and have the same intentions and feelings.

7) By taking these photos, Brandt hopes to raise awareness of the beautiful creatures that we are slowly killing in our everyday lives. He loves animals and by using photography, he captures his most special moments with them, and what may not exist later in the future. Viewers will be affected by his photography because of the stories behind each photo.

8) "There is also something deeply, emotionally stirring and affecting about the plains of Africa—those vast, green rolling plains punctuated by graphically perfect acacia trees under the huge skies."
