American Soldier

1) The most powerful image I saw was the one where Fisher is saying goodbye to his parents and friends, because the tear in his eyes show depth and emotion in the image

2) The images work together by being show as a sequence of events. The photos are in order, and they show big events that happened in his life. As you follow through the pictures, you progress more into his life story.

3) The captions enhance the photographs because they give background information of what happened before the photo was taken. They also show what is clearly going on, and what feelings were felt behind it, which is something you can't see by just looking at the photo.

4) Ian Fisher was just a normal high school student, who was always known for standing up for other people and getting in fights. In his last year of high school, Ian decides to join the army, and goes to basic training. As he struggles with finding himself, and keeping close relationships back home, Ian works his hardest in proving that he was meant to be a soldier. Throughout the years, Ian progresses in the army, and shows his intelligence in many ways, as well as showing love and care for the people he meets along the way.

5) In the photos where Ian is the main subject, the captions are in both present and past tense. Present tense verbs are used in the first sentence, while past tense verbs are used in the following sentences.

6) Breaking Down The Captions
The captions are around 2-3 sentences on average.
Most of the first sentences provide the action that is being shown in the picture.
The second sentences usually contain background information on what happened before or after the photo was taken.
The third sentences in the captions provide quotes.
Yes, there are some captions that include a quote
There are no captions that have four sentences.

7) It is possible to tell a story with captions because the photos are the things that really tell a story, and provide a visual example, which is something that makes it a lot easier for the reader to connect to. In addition, the captions provide more background information on the photo, which gives more information in the story.

8) If you can all a story with captions, it is still important to write a story, because even though the pictures give visuals on what is happening, a caption can only be so long. IN order to make it a story, you need to provide even more information that maybe doesn't even relate to the images, but still needs to be included as part of the story.
